Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRCL) organized a comprehensive one-day training program focused on the “Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) subject” for its staff, contractors, and associates from GEC (General Engineering Consultant) teams in Ahmedabad and Surat. The training was conducted in collaboration with the National Productivity Council, Gandhinagar, emphasizing GMRCL’s commitment to sustainable practices and responsible corporate governance.

The training session took place on 21st June 2024 at the GMRCL Apparel Park Depot in Ahmedabad. This strategic location provided a conducive environment for learning and interactive sessions. The one-day training program on Environment, Social & Governance by GMRCL underscored the organization’s commitment to fostering a culture of sustainability and responsible business practices in metro rail development.

The interactive sessions and knowledge-sharing opportunities provided valuable insights and equipped participants with practical tools to integrate ESG considerations into their daily operations. This initiative reflects GMRCL’s proactive approach toward ensuring that its projects meet infrastructure needs and contribute positively to the environment and society at large.

One-day training on “Towards Clean Construction: Capacity Building Program for Surat Metro ” at SUDA BHAVAN – Surat

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRCL) organized a focused one-day training program titled “Towards Clean Construction: Capacity Building Program for Surat Metro” aimed at promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible practices within the Surat Metro project. The training brought together key stakeholders including GMRCL staff, General Engineering Consultant (GEC) teams, and contractors involved in the construction of Surat Metro. The training took place on 12th July 2024 at SUDA Bhavan, Surat. Hosted by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Surat provided an excellent venue conducive to collaborative learning and engagement.

The training program was coordinated in partnership with: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC): Providing local governance insights and facilitating community engagement strategies. Regional Office of Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB): Offering regulatory expertise and guidance on environmental compliance. WRI India: Serving as the knowledge partner of SMC, bringing expertise in sustainable urban development practices.

The primary objectives of the capacity-building program were: To promote clean construction techniques and minimize environmental impact during the Surat Metro project. To educate participants on regulatory requirements, environmental standards, and pollution control measures. To enhance skills and knowledge related to sustainable construction practices and materials.

The collaboration with Surat Municipal Corporation, GPCB, and WRI India underscores GMRCL’s proactive approach to integrating environmental considerations into the Surat Metro project. The insights gained from this training are expected to significantly contribute to achieving environmental sustainability goals while enhancing project efficiency and fostering community welfare.

Environment Monitoring

The environmental monitoring schedule for the entire period of construction at all sensitive receptors is being implemented by the Contractors and monitored by GMRCL. Air & Noise quality monitored twice in month, water & soil monitored half yearly and Vibration measurements once in three month. Environment monitoring is being carried out by NABL Accredited/MoEFCC recognized private or Government agency. GMRCL has considered key factors while developing mechanism for Environment monitoring includes sample location, monitoring frequency, sampling technique, duration, permissible limits, and corrective actions to be taken for continuous improvement. 7 to 8 locations per construction package were monitored for ambient air quality, noise & vibration measurements during year 2023-24.

Waste Management

Solid wastes generated by Yards & Offices are being disposed off through GMC. Hazardous wastes and Biomedical wastes generated by Casting yards are being disposed off at Common disposal site authorized by GPCB. C & D wastes generated are utilized for backfilling of low lying area in consultation with Municipal Corporation. Muck disposal area identified and developed for disposal of muck within Casting Yard. Periodical compaction and watering activities practiced at Muck disposal area. Empty drums and other non-hazardous wastes are sold out to vendors and few items & drums are reused as Dust bins and traffic diversion purpose.

Biodiversity management

The trees that has been be felled due to the project has been compensated by planting ten times the number of trees cut for Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, Phase II The Afforestation site has been finalized jointly with Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation.

15000 number of trees has been planted (2022-2023) for Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, Phase II . Native species are selected for Afforestation and post care maintenance has been contracted for 3 years. Biodiversity data sharing via GBIF : Biodiversity data (Flora, Fauna)survey and data assessment  has been carried out by GEER Foundation during July 2023 to Feb 2024 and  such data are published as per Project agreement through the global network of the GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility), which provides open-access to all.

Water

Industrial water consumption includes mainly for Batching plant and Curing in Casting yards. Domestic water consumption is mainly for Offices and Labour camp. Both Casting yard has Drainage connection. waste water generated from Batching plan is collected in Sedimentation Tank, and treated water reused for washing of Mixers & drums. RO plant installed for providing drinking water to employees and Labour colony, reject water from RO plant is reused for purpose of washing and watering to plantation.
